Treason

I was thinking the other day about how treason is going to be used as the crime for extremist clerics here in sunny Britain. I'm fairly sure that treason is also the only crime left on our books where the sentence can go all the way up to death. This worries me a little.

According to Radio4 and one of the major law lord type folks Treason is not the appropriate crime and is unlikely to actually be used since no lawyer in the last 60 years has any experience whatsoever of it. Apparently it'll be a new law on inciting terrorism/incitement to murder as the criminal system is used to dealing with these kind of cases and prosecuting them. Then again it was early so it could have been wishful thinking on my part!

The death penalty was abolished for treason in 1998.

Surely there are existing laws anyway to deal with such things. Aren't there a variety of incitement laws for example?

Personally I'm quite happy that if they don't want to live here, they should just leave or if they are spouting shite get booted out. Then again Charles Kennedy did make an interesting point saying that it only sent the problem elsewhere, and meant we lost whatever control we would have had over them... Perhaps it's better that they're here in Belmarsh or wherever than 'recruiting' in Pakistan or wherever...
